Information
Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde is one of the most important operas of music history. In the love duet “O sink hernieder, Nacht der Liebe,” the composer captures in music the experience of time standing still. This duet forms the centerpiece of the second act, which will be performed this evening in its entirety – together with music from Claude Debussy’s Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien, which was the French composer’s reaction to Wagner’s music. Valery Gergiev, who has introduced something like his own Wagner tradition at the Festival Hall, will be entrusting the difficult Tristan part to Austrian heroic tenor Andreas Schager. The singer appears regularly in Bayreuth and previously sang the role of Siegmund under Gergiev in Baden-Baden. Austrian soprano Martina Serafin will be giving her Baden-Baden debut as Isolde.
