Few events on earth match the raw drama of the Palio di Siena, a bareback horse race that has thundered around the city's medieval Piazza del Campo since the Middle Ages. Ten of Siena's seventeen historic contrade (city districts) compete in a breathless 90-second race, but the spectacle stretches across the entire day — from the flag-throwing corteo storico in Renaissance costume to the deafening roar of the crowd packed into the piazza's center. It's one of the most intensely local, unchoreographed events in Europe, and access to proper viewing — balconies, terraces and reserved seating overlooking the track — is both essential and extremely limited given the piazza's historic constraints.
