Organised since 1875 by the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Munich Opera Festival returns in 2027 with its centrepiece focused on Wagner's complete Ring des Nibelungen, presented across two full cyclical performance series beginning with Götterdämmerung on 27 June. The programme is completed by the premiere of Benjamin Britten's Death in Venice at the Prinzregententheater, directed by Vasily Barkhatov and conducted by Edward Gardner, alongside further productions including Donizetti's Maria Stuarda. The festival opens with the Bayerisches Staatsballett's Glanzlichter – A Ballet Gala, and is rounded out by festival chamber concerts and intimate song recitals featuring artists such as Diana Damrau and Lisette Oropesa. Staged across the festival's three historic venues — the Nationaltheater, Prinzregententheater, and Cuvilliés-Theater — the Munich Opera Festival remains one of the richest and most prestigious events in the opera calendar.
