Livorno's historic opera house returns with a season built on rediscovery, opening with Purcell's Dido and Aeneas — a Baroque masterpiece back at Teatro Goldoni for the first time in nearly twenty years. The programme continues with Cherubini's rarely-staged L'Adriano in Siria, which premiered in Livorno in 1782 and hasn't been heard here since, followed by Verdi's Otello after a two-decade absence from the stage, and closes with Donizetti's beloved L'Elisir d'Amore in a new production with Florence's Accademia di Belle Arti. Set inside one of Tuscany's most storied theatres under artistic director Emanuele Gamba, this is a season for those seeking opera's hidden corners as much as its classics.
