About Manchester United

Manchester United Football Club, or “The Red Devils” as their fans call them, is a top-tier team from Old Trafford, Greater Manchester.

Manchester United is the top team in the Premier League having won more trophies than any other team. They have a record of 20 League wins, 12 FA Cup titles, and record holders for most FA Community Shields with 21 wins.

History of Manchester United

Originally, the team was called the Newton Heath LYR Football club, founded in 1878, but changed its name to Manchester United FC in 1910.

The cause of this name change was due to the team’s massive debt of  £2,670 which is equivalent to £280,000 today. To keep the team aline, Harry Stafford, the team captain, approached four local businessmen for funding. Each of these investors provided £500 and received a direct investment in running the club. This led to its name change and a new face for the team in the English football league.

The early days of Manchester United saw a lot of struggle. They didn’t win their first title until 1908 then experienced a lot of losses over the next few decades. Their losing streak pushed them back into the Second Division and it wasn’t until the late 1940s that the team regrouped and went on to win the FA Cup in 1948 followed by a First Division win in 1952.

Manchester United’s Best Years

Manchester United was the first team to win the European Cup in 1968. This success slowed down until the 1980s and 1990s during what came to be known as the “Fergie Years.”

Alex Ferguson took over for the team in 1986 and pushed them to a second-place finish in the 1987-1988 league cup. These “near wins” weren’t good enough and Ferguson nearly lost his job until Manchester United’s victory in the 1990 FA Cup. This led to a string of wins which included their first Winner’s Cup, UEFA Super Cup in 1991. They also saw their first League Cup win in 1993 since their first victory in 1967.

In 1999, this was one of Manchester United’s best year by being the first team to win “the Treble” which is the Premier League, FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League in the same year.
